Kandinsky a passé près de six mois à préparer la création de ce tableau , dans un premier temps l'intention du travail d'évoquer une inondation , baptême , destruction et renaissance en même temps . Il a d'abord décrit le travail sur un panneau en bois surdimensionné , mais a rapidement connu un blocage artistique , et s'est retrouvé incapable de peindre . gabrielle munter , son assistant à l'époque , lui a dit qu'il était bloqué , et il avait besoin de se libérer de ses attributs intellectuels entourant la peinture . Elle a suggéré qu'il répète simplement le mot “ uberflut , ” sens “ flood” ou “ inonder , ” en se concentrant sur le son du mot plutôt que sur sa signification , libérer son esprit du bloc artistique et se concentrer uniquement sur la musique du mot . Kandinsky se met au travail , et terminé la peinture en trois jours , tout en répétant le mot comme un mantra .
